The topic for my speech today is “Festival.” I would like to talk about myfavorite festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival.

In China we have several important festivals, such as the Spring Festival,the Lantern Festival, the Dragon-boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn g them, I like Mid-Autumn festival best, especially because I live inXiamen.

In Xiamen, when we celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival, we do not only followthe common practices such as having a big dinner party with our family, eatingmooncakes, and appreciating the full moon at night, we also have one uniquecustom which is only practiced in Xiamen, that is “Bo Bing”.

“Bo Bing” is a very interesting game that almost all Xiamen people playduring this festival. We will get different prizesaccroding to the different ways the dices show their upper sides. Everyone islikely to become the champion or “Zhuangyuan” for the year. There is an elementof luck and equal opportunity in this game. So people usually get excited whileplaying. Also, the game gives very pleasant sounds. The tinkling made by thedices falling into the bowl is pleasant, people’s laughing, cheering andapplauding for the big prizes they’ve won is pleasant. All this adds greatly tothe joyful atmosphere of this festival. As a kid, of course I also like thematerial prizes I get from the game, such as a candy or a cake.

In this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, my family invited our foreign friendsto come to our home to celebrate the Festival together. They have two childrenwho are younger than me. While our parents were making Jiaozi together, we kidsplayed “Bo Bing”. We bought quite some gifts to share with our guests as enjoyed the game and our get-together very much.

The literal translation of “Bo Bing” is “mooncake gambling.” But actuallyit is not gambling, at least our family never plays it that way. For us, it ismore an occasion of happy sharing and getting-together. This is why Xiamen’sMid-Autumn Festival has become my favorite festival in the year.

In fact, humanism has done much more than just making our conscience clear. It actually saves us from destroying our planet. We all know that we can't upset the balance of nature without a price although sometimes people choose to neglect the consequences and give in to the desire of fortune. Silent Spring, a very famous book written by Rachel Carson, revealed the fact that DDT and such chemical products could be very lethal to creatures like birds, and therefore they caused irreversible damage to our eco-system. The manufacturers knew exactly about the side effects but they chose to conceal the fact for their own interests. Without the humanists like Rachel Carson, we will remain ignorant and eventualy face our own doom desperately.

The role of humanism is absolutely indispensable. It gives us a unique opportunity to be wise and act in ways that elevate us above the animal kingdom. It retains our humanness. unexpectedly，the first lesson i taught turned out a lesson for me. the moment i stepped into the shabby classroom. i was touched by the loud, respectful voices in unison. 'good morning teacher !' instead of fooling around, the children were thirsty for knowledge and efficient in absorbing everything i was able to give them. this made me despise myself for i hadn't even prepared for the class. during the break. i leaned over the squeaky desk, chatting with a sweaty boy in the front row. "without air-conditioning, it's really hot here. are you tired?" not at all. said he. shaking his head. it's fine here. my dad builds asphalt roads. that is really tiring and hot.

as summer advanced. my enthusiasm as a teacher grew. i prepared my lesson carefully and even used some methods my teachers used. i organized many group activities to give the kids fun. strangely enough the heat was also becoming less and less unbearable. soon, my one-month volunnteer came to an end. when i was leaving my last class, i turned back and saw smiling faces and waving hands. never before had i ever had such a feeling of sadness. which was, nevertheless, mixed with a sense of enrichment, fulfillment and happiness. i was paid for my work, amply paid, not in terms of money, but something more valuable.

my english was improved, i was able to teach it, although not very professional. i learned about the grassroots-level society. inside myself a heart is growing. a heart that not only beats for myself. but cares for others as well. the volunteer work gave me a precious little chance of saying thanks. to people like the little boy's father who construct highways and undergrounds, build up modern skyscrapers, and make our cities more and more beautiful. to help the children with their english was all i could do at present to show my gratitude to these unsung heroes. the world may not have been fair to them. so privileged and blessed people like me make their life better. whatever i do for them, however, i know it can't be compared with what they have done to improve the quality of life in our cities. ladies and gentlemen. now i realize that voluntary shouldn't be just a one-time personal experience. it should be a lifetime activity of everybody. many of us are now offering assistance to the needy and to each other and our efforts have indeed made a difference schooling,---- or caring for the elderly in nursing homes, and helping out in 20xx beijing olympics, will not only contribute to the harmony of the world but elevate ourselves as well. emerson once said, "it's one of the most beautiful compensations of this life no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself" he was right. i hear that my university is going to organize another voluntary teaching program this summer. this time i won't be dragged in. i will volunteer. thank you !
