I can never forget the summer in 1996. I went through an extremity ofdespair due to my failure in the National College Entrance Examination. Itseemed that my dream of being a university student would never come true. Oneevening my father came and told me the story of Steven Callahan, who wascrossing the Atlantic alone in his sailboat when it struck something and was a miracle that he survived and was found 76 days later(the longest anyonehas survived a shipwreck on a life raft alone). Later in his narrative he wrotethese sentences “I tell myself I can handle it ared to what others havebeen through I’m fortunate”.

Hearing these sentences I felt something important struck me. I belived mylife would mot be that bad and it was proved to be true. Later during my studyin the university I always told myself “I can handle it” when my own goalsseemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming and every time I saidit ,I always came back to my senses.

Now I work as an English teacher in a middle school. Whenever my studentscomplain about their difficulties in study or want to give up, I will tell thesame story of Callahan to them. I just want to make them believe they can handletheir difficulties because their circumstances are only bad compared tosomething better. But others have been through much worse. Then they will buildup fortitude.

So here, coming to us from the extreme edge of survival, are words that cangive us strength. Whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handleit. Compared to what others have been through, you’re fortunate. Tell this toyourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots withlittle more fortitude.

The Pearl River meanders through the province and eventuallycomes to our beautiful seashore with crystal clear blue water, flourishing withall kinds of different fish and sea creatures. All these natural advantages helpto boost the ever-expanding economy of Guangdong and increase the welfare of itspeople.

Guangdong is privileged to have such a beautiful landscape, with hundredsof historical sites and places of great interest to local people and foreignersalike. Our capital city, Guangzhou, is also known as "the city of flowers"ywhere you look you will see flourishing plants and blossoming flowersoverflowing with vigor.

The people of Guagdong are very friendly to visitors from anywhere. Whoeveryou are and wherever you come from, Guangdong people will greet you with theonly language---Guangdong dialect.

Guangdong is also known as the Chinese capital of delicious food. There isan old saying that "The only best delicacies are in Guangdong.” Food from thisprovince is internationally famous. Its variety of tastes, shapes and colors cansatisfy even the most refined palette. I'm sure, the moment you seat yourself ata Cantonese banquet, your appetite will naturally become keen and eager to tasteall the numerous delicacies of the region. He was bullied at school, Vujicic grew depressed and by the age of 8,contemplated suicide. At age 10, he tried to drown himself in 4 inches of water,but did not go through with it out of love for his parents. After praying togrow arms and legs, Vujicic eventually realized that his accomplishments couldinspire others – and became grateful for his life. A key turning point came whenhis mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severedisability. Vujicic realized he wasn't unique in his struggles and began toembrace and transcend his disability.

This man, the soldier of life, came to my hometown 2 months ago. I got tolisten to him, and talk to him, face to face. I could never forget the look inhis face when he said “when I was young, I always feel cold, and dark. My firstdream was to grow arms and legs, but there is no future for me at all. ” Andnow, 28 years has passed since he was born, 28 years without arms and ’s first dream didn't come true, but he didn't lose his faith of himself,and the faith of this life.

Nick is living a life without limbs, and also a life without are to him, young people, there is no excuses to lose our faith in ourselvesand this world. I understand that life couldn't be anything we want it to be,and life couldn't bring us everything we long for, sometimes, life even takesaway our cherished ones. About a year and a half ago, I took part in my very first English Speech Contest. When I stood before the microphone with all eyes starring directly at me, I could hardly speak. I stood there, embarrassed and helpless, struggling in vain for the right thing to say. My fears had paralyzed me.

While my passion for English has never changed, I lost my courage to speak in public. When my professor again encouraged me to take part in this Competition, I said “no.” I couldn’t endure yet another painful experience. He looked me straight in the eye and said something that pierced my heart. I will never forget his words. “Look,” he said, “We all have our fears, and you have yours. You could twist your ankle in a basketball game, but then be afraid to ever play again. Running away can never dispel your fears, but action will. A winner is not one who never fails，but one who never quits.”

I spent a whole day with his words twisting and turning in my mind. Then I made the bravest and wisest decision of my life: I would face my fears – and take part in the competition!

As it turned out, my dear old professor was right. Now, here I am, once again standing before a microphone. My heart is beating fast, and my mouth is dry, but most importantly, I have faced my fears -- and that makes all the difference!

but here's the thing about my grandfather. underneath this ceremonial role, he was really modest and really introverted -- so much so that when he delivered these sermons, he had trouble making eye contact with the very same congregation that he had been speaking to for 62 years. and even away from the podium, when you called him to say hello, he would often end the conversation prematurely for fear that he was taking up too much of your time. but when he died at the age of 94, the police had to close down the streets of his neighborhood to accommodate the crowd of people who came out to mourn him. and so these days i try to learn from my grandfather's example in my own way.

so i just published a book about introversion, and it took me about seven years to write. and for me, that seven years was like total bliss, because i was reading, i was writing, i was thinking, i was researching. it was my version of my grandfather's hours of the day alone in his library. but now all of a sudden my job is very different, and my job is to be out here talking about it, talking about introversion. (laughter) and that's a lot harder for me, because as honored as i am to be here with all of you right now, this is not my natural milieu.

so i prepared for moments like these as best i could. i spent the last year practicing public speaking every chance i could get. and i call this my “year of speaking dangerously.“ (laughter) and that actually helped a lot. but i'll tell you, what helps even more is my sense, my belief, my hope that when it comes to our attitudes to introversion and to quiet and to solitude, we truly are poised on the brink on dramatic change. i mean, we are. and so i am going to leave you now with three calls for action for those who share this vision.
